According to folklore, the city of Antwerpen got its name from the defeat of a giant who had placed a toll on crossing the river. The giant was slain by the hero Brado, who cut off the giant’s hand and threw it to the river. The name ‘Antwerpen’ comes from the Dutch for hand (hand) and throw (werpen). The fountain outside of the Stadhuis depicts Brado throwing the giant’s hand.
